More people buy PC's because they are also more universal, meaning more people have them, so more software is developed for them. Also, when IBM began to market the PC they let other manufacturers build and market compatible machines which caused the market to boom. As opposed to Apple which is the only company that makes Apple compatible products.

It is the same as when Sony developed Betamax to compete with VHS. It was a smaller casette, with better quality, but the held all the pattents and eventually VHS dominated because of the ability different companies had to market their own products.

There are also more viruses and spyware for PC's because they are more popular, not because Apple is better. If Apple were to grow in popularity, more viruses would become developed too.

Because PC's are a lot easier to maintain, plus you can swap any compatible computer parts with other parts, but apple has only apple parts, making it more expensive to fix and maintain.
I asked the same question many years ago when I had an Amiga. Why would you want an expensive IBM or clone when my Amiga did so much more for so much less money. Marketing and stupidity. There should more competition like there used to be.

I think you mean IBM compatible computers. PC just stands for ''personal computer''. Onto the question though, I myself prefer IBM compatible computers due to the sheer erm..compatibility between computer models. You can take a project from a Dell to a HP to whatever else, and not have to worry about transferring over your work.
pc's are more affordable; more software is compatible; and more industries use pc's so a home user will be compatible with their office system.

Torrents is a way to file share from peer to peer (P2P) unfortunately you don't know what is on the peer system with regards viruses etc, until your anti virus goes mad detecting them as you download, or sometimes does not detect them at all, until the next time you boot the machine and they execute themselves (exe files) and virus makers nearly always execute them to run in your system32 folder, so are much harder to get rid of (they know this) because system32 is running in the background, and therefore the virus software cannot kill the process it is trying to quarantine/delete, access to that file is nearly always denied, that's why safe mode is used to get rid of them, also some viruses have the capability to duplicate themselves every time you boot the machine, so really you should use file sharing with caution, and scan your system at regular intervals.

My laptop makes a sort of whirring noise, but it is not an annoying noise. It has got to make some sort of noise if it is working...it is the clunking and whinning noises that are the problem.

It is much easier to give discounts than it will be to raise your rate in the future. The final advice is to form a LLC or a business entity that will separate your work from your personal life. The company, AST is out of business. A computer repair person told me I should be able to find a replacement power supply on ebay. He said center positive. I only have the info on the back of the monitor DC 12v, a diagram of three identicle circles connected by a line:

Press the restart button then as it is starting up press F4 choose safe mode (only will work if you know what you may have done to cause it and you can get in to uninstall or fix it)

Run Windows XP installer from the bootable Windows CD, choose install --%26gt; upgrade. During the installation process, when asked where to install, choose a partition and ''leave file system intact''. Then, it reinstalls your Windows without hurting any of the stuff on your hard drive.

you can't repair a monitor with a software. if you mean your display is not proper.. you would need drivers for your display card not monitor, as all monitors are plug n play and dont need any drivers.

You would need to find out the make and model of your display card and search on google for its drivers.

Well, Not sure what is wrong with the your Monitor in the first place so I am guessing here.

1) If it does not work at all out of the box, after you connect all the parts as per the manual, return it to the manufacturer.

2) If it works, but does not provide all the features as explained in the manual (resolution, color depth and other functions, then you need a driver). Make sure your Display card also supports the resolution that your monitor can support.

3) Skewed image: Try to adjust the screen using the OSD menu and you should be fine.

4) Improper Color: Try to see if the Monitor has correct Gama settings and color pellet (Ideally they should be fine in the first place) if they are, then best thing to do is return it to the manufacturer.

Yesterday, upon looking for a picture I uploaded from my camera, I discovered that over six months of picture files are missing. I can't imagine any way they could have been deleted. They aren't showing up in my recycle bin, and running a search for them hasn't worked either. I had my computer repaired and restored several months ago. At that time, they moved my picture files to an obscure file on a separate drive to save them, but I can't locate that file now either. I printed out a picture taken a few months back just before Christmas, so all of the pictures were there then. I'm missing our 25th anniversary pictures, vacation photo's, %26 sentimental pictures of my kids and relatives. I could cry right now!!

search for other formats (what id recommend is putting new pics from your camera and see what format they are saved under and then search for that and see what you can find)

If you had computer repaired and hard drive was replaced, you may not have those files in comp, not sure what you mean by msts, but, if you deleted files, and still have same hard drive usually if you go back to recycle, try restore in recycle, however if you turned off computer you may not be able to do it once you go back. As i said if you have the same hard drive you can go to computer or use restore disk, it asks you what date you want to restore to, do not go to far back or you will loose anything recent. hope that helps, you can also try help-support, they are good...

Hi one of my other laptops has got a major proplem and i was just wondering if you could help me have a better understanding of what the proplem is before i send it for repair and also if you know how the proplem can be resolved that would also be very helpful. Ok my computer needing repaired is using windows Xp perfessional os. I think it had a problem with its fan which was making a huge racket when booting up and was stoping and starting every few seconds. When i relized that there was a proplem i stopped using that computer for about a couple of weeks. I optomistically turned it back on to see is the proplem had solved itself and thats when the real problem began. When the computer boot-up it came up with the options to start the computer in safe mode. etc. I select start windows normally. Actually your credit record does tell a lot about you. Maybe not if you can turn on a light switch but if you pay your electric bill when you do. I personally wouldn't hire or even trust someone that has numerous outstanding debts. Your credit report shows how trustworth of a person you may be. If you don't pay your bills you are esentially stealing from your creditors, and who wants a thief working for them? An honest person that has debts would contact their creditors and make payment arrangements and therefore not have a negative credit history. Your employer doesn't want someone who has 5 credit cards maxed out running a cash register or handling their finances.
These things can help them determine your character and if you have a good work ethic. Also, if you have a past history of skipping out on landlords, or bills, you might do the same on a job. If you have embezzled money or had anything like that in the past, you wouldn't be put in charge of money. If you owe a lot of money on credit cards, or have judgements against you, you might be more prone to steal from the company to pay off debts, etc etc etc. Get used to it-everyone asks for it now.
Personal credit is an indicator of character. If you pay bills timely, it suggests that you honor your obligations (and would honor your role as an employee).

My BF and I have our own biz doing computer repair and websites. In November I was done with this one lady鈥檚 website. It was everything she wanted it to be, and I was done before schedule and uploaded it to her server to go 鈥渓ive鈥?

After words, I sent her the payment information. She had known what the price was going to be around from the beginning, so what I was sending her was no surprise. The charges came up to $150 but I gave her a discount for bartering with us and it became $115.

Keep in mind she is a photographer, so I know she had money coming to her sooner or later.

She emailed me telling me that she was short on money that month and was going to be short on her rent and was getting people to help her out. So I gave her some time. Come December I emailed her, she finally got back to me saying she didn鈥檛 have access to the internet except when she went to the library. However, I found out in January she had indeed been on the internet a lot because I accidentally stumbled onto her MySpace page and saw all her communications. I did not confront her about this though, it wouldn鈥檛 be good for business I figured.

So then in February I sent her an email that if she doesn鈥檛 pay x amount with in x amount of time I will start charging interest on it for a late fee. She had not called or emailed me back. I really think she鈥檚 trying to avoid me. If she really wanted to talk to me I live across the street. It is not my place to go knock on her door, that would be over barring and bad for business. It鈥檚 not much money I am asking for, and we are a small biz so we really do need the money.

You don't need to pay somebody to rid your computer of malware. You can do it yourself. Take that $50 you were going to spend on repairs and, instead, buy yourself an Internet Security Suite and install it on your computer. I personally recommend Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite, but I've heard a lot of good things about Kaspersky Internet Security. I'd stay away from Norton and McAfee. After installing whichever Suite you buy, update them, then do scan after scan until the Suite doesn't find any more infections. Then download and install a couple of anti-spyware programs (Spybot Search %26 Destroy and Ad-Aware are recommended; both work very well with Zone Alarm). Again, install and update them, then do scan after scan until they find no more infections. Then finally, download and install a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and works very well. Again, install and update it, then do a scan (once is sufficient); you want to click on ''registry'' then ''scan for issues'' then ''fix all issues''. Your computer should be free of malware now and should run considerably better and faster.

At least once a week, update your security programs and do scans; this should keep your computer free of malware.

I can't open my drives (c: d: f:) etc. when I am in 'My Computer'. I'm sure that the reg files have been altered probably by a virus or spyware or trojan. When I double-click on c: drive for example, it only comes up with the option to open it with the list of other programmes. I can access my drives in other ways, but all the same I want to remove (or replace) the reg file so that my system is healthy and free from hackers, virus, worms etc.

Firstly, remove the new RAM that you have added. If your PC starts, then you are in good luck otherwise, take it to a service station. In case you system is booting after taking out the new memory stick, then, the problem you are facing can be explained below:-

We have an older Gateway computer that has not been used for a while. The computer isn't hooked up to the internet so we can't download anything onto it. We are using the computer to type up papers (needed it for a secretary to use). We bought a new printer (HP or Cannon D1400?) and we put in the disc that came with it before plugging it in the comp to make sure it gets installed correctly. During the installation it stops and says it cannot find any USB ports. There are 2 on the back of the computer which we used the day before with a mouse (at first it didn't work till we rebooted). We plugged the printer in and rebooted. The computer didn't recognize any new devices and had the same problem with the installation. We tried the wizard and didn't find the printer model for it. We were wanting to know if using the repair on the XP disc would fix the problem or what else we could do to solve this?

A while back I got my computer fixed, and with my tendency to ruin computers they gave me a restore disc as well as a ''Compaq Operating System CD'' I have no idea what that one is...

Sounds like the restore disc isn't to be operated through windows - set your BIOS to boot from disc and then reboot the PC with your restore disc in the drive and it should carry out the restore automatically.

If it's screwed beyond recovery then reboot it but this time with the operating system disc and if prompted for a fresh install or a repair try the repair first it will reinstall your driver and boot files.

Worse case scenario, you can put your old hard drive in a new machine and access all your files.
Most laptops take more than anything else voltage wise so you probably have not damaged the machine, especially if the screen comes up with the bios bit.

When you switch it on repeatedly push F8 and see what happens or CTRL

If you then get a screen saying loads of things including select how to start, go for safe mode with Networking and see if you can run the M/C

do a defrag if you can.

You may be able to start the computer with an Oh Sh1t disc if you have one. Or the disc that cam with the M/C.

New motherboard - your old one is toast.

If it makes you feel any better, I did the same thing to an HP Pavilion PIII-600 a few years back. Taught me not to mess with BIOS updates unless absolutely necessary.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The normal human desire to always have the latest and greatest can be fatal with a PC. I can't even count the number of times I've seen ''upgrades'' mess something up.

Sounds like it has become interrupted, if the backup is not even working, it looks like you now have a box sized paperweight.

Because you dont post, it sounds like you wont even be able to make a backup bios disk to restore.

As a future note, you should never attempt a flash of the bios unless theres a problem, or unless your willing to brick it like you have with this one.

You have totally wrecked it. You probably need to buy another board, unless you can get a new bios chip. I have NEVER had to run a bios update in twenty plus years of machine and network support In normal use a bios update gives you nothing more than you had before.
