Apple took my computer to be repaired for free because of my warranty, then said it'd be $755!

There are white horizontal lines on the bottom half of the screen of my iBook G4. I went to the genius bar at the Apple store. I was told it was covered under my warranty. They sent it out to be repaired. I got a call today saying there was more damage and it wasn't covered under my warranty. She said they could not continue to work on my iBook without payment. She said it would cost $755. I told her "No chance." She said it would be sent back to the Apple store, white lines and all, for me to pick up. I was without my computer for a week. What argument do I have to have it fixed for free?

Michael C is correct.

It doesn't matter what computer you buy, the warranty situation will be the same.

If you break it, you buy it (the repairs).

sounds like you are sol...
If the problem is due to damage you have done then why would you expect them to fix it for free?
Apparently, the person who accepted the computer misdiagnosed the problem ... if they had the capability to diagnose it at all. I'm sure if you read your warranty, you will see that it spells out certain repairs which aren't covered.
That's why you do not buy Apple products! You purchased a very expensive looking modern-art piece with as much functionality as a Windows or Linux laptop for much cheaper and much more customizable. Anyways back to your problem. The best thing that you can do is tell the people at the Apple store (hopefully the person you talked to before) what they said about your warranty. If they can help you, great, if they can't then continue forward. Keep calling Apple telling each representative your story. Most of the time representatives are lazy people just like you and me who want the easiest way out by saying YES and NO to your questions. However, some people actually like doing their jobs. Try to get your call escalated to a manager of the callers and see what happens. You just really have to put your dignity out on the line if you want to get what you want from Apple. Hopefully this works, if not, now you've got a $2,000 paperweight and the idea to NEVER BUY APPLE AGAIN!
If it is a warranty repair, then there is your argument. If it's not a warranty repair, then spend the nearly $800 on a new computer. No Mac is worth that much. :-)

The fact that you were without your computer for a week is non-material. As a user of a machine, you will be subject to outages and times where the machine does not perform certain tasks that you want it to do. Computer repair shops don't have a magic wand to wave and send your computer back immediately repaired for free.

Know that LCD problems are seldom covered under manufacturer warranties. Many extended warranties, however, will cover your display. Not that I'm a big fan of extended warranties . . .

Good Luck!
