I have an Averatec laptop which I bought 2 years ago. It has an in-built CD/DVDROM which no longer works. I tried connecting an external CD-ROM to download all my data so that I can have the CD-ROM repaired. However, the external drive when connected, functions erratically.
Any other way to download my stuff? I do have lot of photographs and other data in my computer and I think, a jump drive would not be able to hold everything.

You could use an external hard disk drive to backup data before sending your laptop for repair... It would not necessarily be an added cost as the drive could be used as and when you want in the long run... very useful...

For backing up my data I use Acronis True Image 10.0. With this program you can store your important data on FTP server or any USB drive if your DVDROM doesn't work. Learn more about True Image here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/pro...
Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem cn be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful.
Try using NTBACKUP which is a program supplied by Microsoft that is included in the "included" or "extra" folders on the installation CD-ROM. From there you will be able to backup whatever you want and reinstall them easily and relatively painless.
OK. If you have an old enough computer, play with lots of floppies. Although, I suspect you don't becuase then there wouldn't be a cd-dvd drive.
